Other than riding the occasional 3' freighter wave, not a whole lot of surfing action in Puget Sound. If you could ride waves in Seattle, it would have probably looked something like this, or at least it might have in the glorious '80s.

Sweet Oblivion is the sixth studio album by Screaming Trees, released on September 8, 1992. Selling in excess of 300,000 copies on the strength of the hit, 'Nearly Lost You,' it quickly became the band's best-selling record, and was the closest they ever came to achieving mainstream success. 'Nearly Lost You' benefited from an appearance on the soundtrack for Singles, the film that followed the lives of a group of early Gen X'ers in Seattle, Washington at the height of the 1990s grunge phenomenon. The soundtrack was a platinum-selling, top 10 hit record which featured many other popular Seattle bands of the era.

As one of the two bookend clubs on either side of the Denny Way freeway overpass (the Off Ramp being the other) that ruled the Seattle scene during the early 1990s, when the city was discovered by the world. RKCNDY was a huge, two-level, warehouse-type space that had amazing sound and was an all around great place to catch a band most any night of the week. The closure of RKCNDY in 1999 was a hard hit to the all-ages scene, especially with Seattle's Teen Dance Ordinance still firmly in place for another three years.

Without question, The Hurricane Cafe was Seattle's quintessential greasy spoon and the combination of always being open and the great Belltown location meant it was where everyone seemed to wind up after taking in a show. Opened in 1994 by the people that owned Beths Café on Aurora, they wanted a new spot that could be another Beth's, yet closer to the city. As far as all-night diner's go, you couldn't beat The Hurricane Cafe. Breakfast anytime with huge omelets and bottomless hashbrowns as well as killer shakes, burgers, fries, and nachos. Oh, and they also had a full bar serving up some pretty mean drinks as well. It was probably best described as a comfortable dive bar that opened up a diner and made it awesome.

The OK Hotel was a cafe, bar, and music venue located under the viaduct in Seattle's Pioneer Square district. Founded in 1988, the club came to an end with the Nisqually earthquake of February 28, 2001, which damaged numerous buildings in the historic district. Most widely recognized outside of Seattle as a prominent location in the movie Singles (1992), the OK Hotel was one of numerous active Seattle rock venues during the celebrated local scene of the late eighties.

1000 Smiling Knuckles is the fourth studio album by Seattle grunge band Skin Yard that was released in 1991. The first single was the title track, for which a video was shot. Skin Yard was formed in January 1985, playing their first official show on June 7, 1985, opening for the U-Men. While Skin Yard may not have received the kind of national recognition many of their contemporaries did, their Pacific Northwest following was huge, and are considered one of the heaviest grunge bands of all time.

The Rocket was a free biweekly newspaper based in Seattle and serving the Pacific Northwest from 1979 to 2000. The newspaper's chief purpose was to document local music. This focus distinguished it from other area weeklies such as the Seattle Weekly and the Willamette Week, which reported more on local news and politics. By 1982, the paper’s circulation had grown to 50,000 copies per month and managed to attract nationally known writers and cartoonists as contributors. The staff attempted to cover only obscure alternative bands, but the publisher continued to insist that mainstream material be given equal time. The editorial team agreed to do so, but only if they could trash the mainstream acts a little in the articles.

Seattle is situated on an isthmus between Lake Washington and Puget Sound. Logging was the first major industry in the city, and Seattle is now the fourth largest container port in North America. While record labels were scouring the Pacific Northwest for every band with the 'Seattle Sound,' Diamond Fist Werny was doing their own thing, and doing it better than anyone else with the gravitational pull of a stellar black hole. An indie band with ethereal, Indian vibes coupled with quirky, sparing guitar rhythms, DFW took fans on a trip with their blurry grooves, breaking the boundaries between musical genres. And just as fans had been lulled into a sense of space though their succulent sound, churning, aggressive guitars worked to accommodate the swaying motions of the crowd, quickly reminding them that they were listening to a rock band. If you haven't heard them, you are missing out to say the absolute least.

The unheralded college rock band Dharma Bums garnered a passionate cult of fans, especially in their hometown of Portland, Oregon, but the group broke up just when the Pacific Northwest was attracting media attention for its underground music scene. Originally calling themselves the Afterludes, they later changed it to the Dharma Bums. The group used money from sold-out gigs in Portland to visit Seattle in search of a label, finding one with PopLlama. In 1988, they released the Dharma Bums' first album, Haywire. "Boots of Leather" was a smash on college radio, leading the band to a new deal with Frontier in 1989. Many expected the Dharma Bums to be a breakthrough alt-rock act of the Northwest music scene, but that wasn't in the cards.
