Description: Old Smithville Burying Ground known as the oldest cemetery in Brunswick County, and situated in the heart of downtown Southport, the Old Smithville Burying Ground is the final resting place of a number of notable residents and heroes throughout the centuries. The burying ground was established in 1792, and the interred include Governor Benjamin Smith, the town’s original namesake and former North Carolina governor, General Robert Howe, another hero of the Revolutionary War, and centuries of soldiers, shipwreck victims, and more.
