The small town of Velez Blanco in the Almeria province of Anadalucia, Spain. Above the town is the fine Renaissance castle built by the Marquises of Velez Blanco in the early 16th century as an extension to the Moorish alcazaba. The castle is now just a shell as the Dukes of Medina sold the interior to an antiques dealer in 1904. The courtyard is now in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Admiralty Head Lighthouse Sketched is an art print I created using a black and white sketching technique. Admiralty Head is located with Fort Casey on Whidbey Island. The lighthouse and fort are situated on the northern end of Puget Sound above Seattle. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in Halifax and is the burial site for early Irish Catholics. The church is Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel. Lindbergh with his airplane. US aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974) on tour in 1928 with the airplane, Spirit of St Louis, in which he made the first solo transatlantic flight. This flight, also the first non-stop transatlantic flight in an airplane, took place in May 1927. Lindbergh took off near New York, USA, and flew for over 33 hours to reach Paris, France, over 5700 kilometres away. Spirit of St Louis was a monoplane (a single wing mounted above a fuselage) built from steel. It was 8.5 metres long with a wingspan of 14 metres. The single nosecap propeller was powered by a Wright radial motor (cylinders jutting out of nosecap, upper right). Photographed on 13 January 1928, after a tour to Cuba.

Catalan Atlas, 14th century. The 6-page Catalan Atlas (1375) was produced on vellum by the Jewish cartographer Abraham Cresques. It was commissioned by the rulers of the Kingdom of Aragon (north-eastern Spain). Two pages are on cosmography, and four on geography. These two pages show Europe, North Africa, and the Near East. The pictures include various rulers and cities (including flags) and mountains. The text is in Catalan. This version is a facsimile (exact reproduction) produced in 1959 by the Spanish scholars Joan Vernet and David Romano. The facsimile pages have been illuminated by hand in colour and gold leaf.

Leonid meteor shower. Historical artwork of the spectacular Leonid meteor shower of 13 November 1833. The shower's three hour peak resulted in terror. Meteors, also called shooting stars, are tiny dust grains which enter the Earth's atmosphere and glow as they are heated by air resistance. Leonid meteor showers occur annually for about 2 days around mid November when the Earth crosses the orbit of debris produced by the comet Tempel-Tuttle. These meteors enter the atmosphere at speeds of about 72 kilometres per second. There are 5-20 meteors each hour, apart from about once every 33 years when thousands can be seen. This artwork was made in 1889.

Lascaux II replica of a Lascaux cave painting. These are horse and cow figures in the central gallery. The original Lascaux cave was closed to the public in 1963. The full-scale Lascaux II replica opened nearby in 1983. The Lascaux cave paintings in south-western France, around 17,000 years old, were painted by Cro-Magnon man, an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens), using red, brown and yellow ochre, and black manganese dioxide. They may have had religious and artistic significance. Photographed in 2010.

This is an image of the centerpiece of the Praça do Comércio square in Lisbon. It is a monumental equestrian bronze statue of King José I (the Marquis of Pombal) who coordinated a massive rebuilding effort of the entire plaza and the arch after the great earthquake of November 1755 that was followed by a tsunami and a fire that destroyed most of Lisbon and many other buildings by the river.
