Hurricane Hernan off Baja California, Mexico, on 1st September 2002. Hernan peaked here as a Category 5 hurricane, with winds exceeding 230 kilometres per hour. Later it weakened and moved out into the eastern Pacific. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. Blue Marble image of Earth. Composite satellite image of Earth's western hemisphere, centred on the Atlantic Ocean. North is at top. The image is one of a set entitled Blue Marble: Next Generation, released in October 2005, which improves upon Blue Marble 2000. The new images combine data collected over a longer period of time at an improved resolution of 500 metres per pixel. Features include cloud cover, oceans, phytoplankton activity, topography, and city lights in the nighttime part of the hemisphere. Data was obtained mainly by NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites between July 2001 and July 2004. Topography is based on radar data collected by the Space Shuttle Endeavor.

Clouds over the Americas, GOES satellite image. Three low-pressure systems form swirling cloud masses across the USA at top, one over the Pacific coast, one over the USA, and one off the Atlantic coast. These have classic comma shapes. Each system is bringing rain or snow to the land areas they cross. The data for this image was obtained on 31 March 2014 by the GOES 13 and GOES 15 satellites. The GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) weather satellites are operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Aurora borealis in the night sky. The aurora borealis is a coloured light display (the northern lights) that is visible in the night sky, usually only at high latitudes. It occurs when charged and energetic particles from the Sun (the solar wind) are drawn by Earth's magnetic field to the polar regions. Hundreds of kilometres up, they collide with gas molecules and atoms, causing them to emit light. This image shows the full colours of the aurora as captured by camera, showing colours not visible to the naked eye. Tornado. This tornado is part of the extended tornado outbreak that devastated parts of the Central United States on 4 May 2007. The most destruction occured in Greensburg, Kansas and other tornadoes were reported across South Dakota, Colorado and Oklahoma. The outbreak continued until the 6 May 2007 and a total of 123 tornadoes was confirmed. Photographed on 4th May 2007, in Ellis County, Oklahoma, USA.

A very British thing broadcast on the radio four times a day since 1911( with a couple of little gaps for the World Wars. It always has the same format and is no more than 380 soothing mellifluous words. Loved by millions who have no need for the actual information, but love the delivery.It was actually debated in parliament when the BBC wanted to move the late night broadcast.(They didn't in response to the public outcry!) A specially made marbled paper with a sea spray theme,with little polka dot snips of the 31 coastal areas covered and a sample forecast. It doesn't get a lot more British than this!

The Weather Project by Olafur Eliasson, 2003. This installation focused on how the British like to discuss the weather. What looked like a complete sun was actually only half a circle. The top half was the reflection of the bottom half in a mirror that stretched along the entire length of the ceiling. Monochromatic light was used to eliminate all colour and spurts of mist added to the atmosphere. Photographed in the Turbine Hall, Tate Modern, London, UK.
