The Pacific Electric Railway (PE), nicknamed the Red Car Line, was a privately owned mass transit system in Southern California consisting of electrically powered streetcars, interurban cars, and buses. The PE grew to become the largest interurban system in the world, spanning over 1,100 miles and operating 1,200 cars throughout Southern California in the pre-freeway era. Red Car service provided fast efficient passenger and freight interurban transportation in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, making commuting within minutes possible. Suburban towns sprang up and developed along the PE rails. The Pacific Electric also ran one of the few electrically-powered Railway Post Office routes in the country.

Southern Pacific Lines was originally founded as a land holding company in 1865, later acquiring in 1885 the Central Pacific Railroad through leasing. By 1900, the Southern Pacific system was a major railroad system incorporating many smaller companies, such as the Texas and New Orleans Railroad and Morgan’s Louisiana and Texas Railroad. It extended from New Orleans through Texas to El Paso, across New Mexico and through Tucson, to Los Angeles, through most of California, including San Francisco and Sacramento. Central Pacific lines extended east across Nevada to Ogden, Utah, and reached north through Oregon to Portland.

Cumbres and Toltec Narrow Gauge Train by Debra Martz I've taken this scenic steam engine train ride from Antonito, CO to Chama, NM on several different occasions. It is a spectacular day filled with awesome views as you travel over high trestles, through tunnels, and along narrow shelves above deep gorges. At other times, while visiting Chama, NM, I've joined the enthusiastic "train chasers" to capture the train in action. I highly recommend the scenic ride but chasing the trains is tons of fun, too! The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has five operating coal fired, steam operated, narrow gauge locomotives #484, 487, 488, 489, and 463.
