In 1923, George Wight opened an auto parts yard on Gage Avenue in Bell, California. The shop was a combination of salvage yard and machine shop, and it catered to the race crowd in the early days of dry lakes racing. George began removing speed equipment from the junkers he bought. George sold the speed equipment separately under what eventually became Bell Auto Parts. Bell Auto Parts is one of the first, if not the first, speed shop in the United States and it didn't take long before it was the center of racing and rodding activities for the greater Los Angeles area.

J.C. Whitney & Co. began in 1915 as The Warshawsky Company, a scrap metal yard on the South Side of Chicago, founded by Lithuanian immigrant Israel Warshawsky. Israel’s son Roy come onboard, and his first contribution was to create a catalog, advertising it in national magazines. For 25-cents, customers would receive their catalog, chock-full of parts to help them work on and customize their cars. Response to the ad was overwhelming, and the company soon began shipping more parts through the mail than over their Chicago sales counter. The name changed to J.C. Whitney & Co. to give it a more American sound. Post WWII was an incredibly profitable time for J.C. Whitney as returning G.I.s got the hot rod bug, and needed parts in droves.

Abe “Al” Wexler opened his first Al’s Auto Supply store in Everett, Washington back in 1955. Al grew his business into a chain of 15 locations throughout the Northwest, becoming gear head’s auto parts store of choice. In the mid ’80s, Al sold the chain, which continued to operate as Al’s Auto Supply until it was sold again in 1999 and the locations rebranded as part of a larger national chain.

If any single shop could be credited with the 'Ohio style' of hot rod design, it would hands down be Lobeck's Hot Rod Parts. Beginning in the early '70s in Cleveland, Ohio, Barry Lobeck designed hot rods and custom parts that would define the new traditional look. From custom-designed rolling chassis to complete hot rods and more parts than you can shake a stick at, Lobeck's did it all for the better part of four decades, leaving a trail of builds that are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
