The church is a basilica in the classical renaissance style and its brilliant white marble gleams above the blue water of the lagoon opposite the Piazzetta and forms the focal point of the view from every part of the Riva degli Schiavoni. Nessie is a bit of a jet setter, and by that I mean she travels by ocean jet streams—mostly undetected. Her favorite pastime is to visit beautiful landscapes made famous by her favorite Impressionist, Monet. After seeing Claude Monet's 1908 "San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk", she had to see it for herself... but she wasn't the only one. This image was created from my original painting. The sun is gradually setting over Venice. Here we see on the left the island of San Giorgio Maggiore with the campanile of its magnificent Palladian church which dates from 1566 and the subject for many artists including Monet. It is now the HQ of the Cini Foundation Arts Centre with a noted library. Further on we can see the distinctive domes of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Here the Giudecca Canal, the Grand Canal and the Canale de San Marco meet in the Venetian Lagoon.
