Royal Terns and sandpipers enjoy the solitude of the Caribbean Ocean on St. Maarten. Royal terns are quite common in the Caribbean islands and feed close to the beach.

This is my original artwork of a pier located on St. Simons Island, including a large sand bar that splits the Atlantic Ocean at low tide. St. Simons Island is one of the Georgia coast barrier islands.

I encountered a party of eight juvenile Pectoral Sandpipers at the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area as September 2018 passed its halfway mark. Like the other shorebirds who normally prefer the grassier, less muddy parts of the beach to forage from, these medium-sized migratory shorebirds did not mind me in their midst. Photographed on a sunny and slightly breezy afternoon on a fairly low high tide that let me walk out a few hundred feet from shore to observe the visiting fauna in close quarters.

The northern gannet is a fabulous seabird to watch as it dives vertically into the sea at speeds of up to 62 mph to feed on mackerel and herring. They thrive in large colonies located on cliffs overlooking the ocean or on small, elevated rock islands. This photograph was taken along the Atlantic seaboard in the gannet's non-breeding range.

The marshes of St. Simons Island, Georgia, are famous for their golden color and for being the home of a great variety of wildlife and shorebirds.

This is my original artwork of two mute swans flying over the golden marshes of St. Simons Island in Georgia. Mute swans are less vocal than other swans - hence their name. They are the heaviest flying bird (up to 51 pounds) and the second largest waterfowl species after the trumpeter swan.

As a fan of both Shakespeare and shorebirds, this scene might be alternatively captioned "Baird(s) on the Beach." My meeting them in such close quarters was an unexpected pleasure; a small contingent of these tiny migrant sandpipers (all juveniles!) was completely at ease with the photographer in their midst, and continued to feed nonchalantly on aquatic bugs or park themselves on top of the mounds of seaweed nearby. Photographed over the Labour Day 2018 long weekend.
