Smeaton's Tower is a memorial to the civil engineer John Smeaton, who designed the third Eddystone Lighthouse that was situated off Plymouth. Smeaton`s Lighthouse was operational from 1759 to 1877, when the base upon which it stood started to erode. It was dismantled and rebuilt at Plymouth Hoe.

Smeatons Tower is the third and most notable Eddystone Lighthouse. It marked a major step forward in the design of lighthouses. In use until 1877, it was largely dismantled and rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe in the city of Plymouth, Devon where it now stands as a memorial to its designer, John Smeaton, the celebrated civil engineer.

Smeaton's Tower is the upper part of John Smeaton's Eddystone Lighthouse, originally built in 1759 on the Eddystone Rocks, some 14 miles south of the city and port of Plymouth, South Devon, England. The lighthouse was dismantled in 1877 and moved, stone by stone, to Plymouth Hoe where it was rebuilt for all to see today. Plymouth Hoe is perhaps best known as the site of the famous game of bowls played by Sir Francis Drake in 1588, whilst waiting for the tide to change before sailing out with the English fleet to engage the Spanish Armada.
