Green Lake in Austria with Bench

There is a beautiful lake in Austria, Styria that is not very big but famous. Every year after the snow melts, the lake fills with water during the Spring. Divers discovered this lake at this time of year, as benches and paths were under water for a few months. A picture of a sunken bench in National Geographic and being voted #1 most beautiful lake in Austria added to its recognition. Divers are no longer permitted as they spoiled the lake's delicate ecosystem. Tourists still come in droves... but if you go there early in the morning, the lake is all yours, like it used to be, for us 'natives'. Beautiful, quiet, birds singing, wind rustling through the trees, high mountains looking down majestically.. and ah the color... It is the beaut...

Unfortunately this lake has been 'discovered' by divers, thanks to a National Geographic image and is now overrun by divers. Old mountain hut in Austria. This one is next to a farmhouse and when generations would switch places, the 'elders' would 'retire' to a small hut, while the young generation would take over the farm and farming. This allowed the older generation to have their own place nearby to enjoy relaxed years of no longer having to work the farm, 'golden years', while still being close to their families. Today this hut is rented out and used as a weekend retreat. 2016. iphone 6.

Every July in Austria, right after it rains, people go and find chanterelles in the forests. It is a childhood memory, going with a bag, a knife and my dad to find mushrooms. You always cut off some of the 'root' and dig it back in... or so we learned. It is so much fun looking out for those yellow delicious mushrooms. Summer 2016. iphone 6.

In our little village we sometimes go down to the river, mostly to let our dogs drink some water before we walk back home. The afternoon sunlight and peaceful atmosphere makes me think of a favorite quote of mine “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” (Heraclitis). A Field of Blooming Narcissus

A long standing tradition in Austria is to bless food the day before Easter Sunday. People gather either in church or in front of a small chapel and place wicker baskets, filled with smoked ham, sausages, horseradish, colored eggs and whatever else they consider necessary for a hearty meal after lent, in front of the altar. Baskets are covered by with a linen blanket that has been hand stitched, mostly with red cross stitching, and are decorated with flowers from the garden and an egg. A priest does the blessing and then people go home to have a joyful meal with their families. April 2017, iPhone 7Plus.

Austria, Styria. First flowers of Spring are always special. One waits and waits and then, all of a sudden, after a long and often very dark winter, they are there. The smell is 'betaeubend' which translates as narcotic and one can't help but go back again and again to smell this wonderful deep smell again. March 2017, iPhone 7plus

Ever since we had Lily of the Valley or 'Maigloeckchen' as we call it in German, I have loved the sweet smell of this flower. Only later did I find out that it is quite poisonous. They still come up every Spring in my garden in Austria and I still love the smell and now also the memory of childhood that they bring with them. I left this image on my profile as well, as it lends itself for a message, with the flower off center.. May 2016, iphone 6.
