The Portara (temple of Apollo) and the Chora ("capital") of Naxos island in the background. Cyclades, Greece. The Portara or the “Great Door” is essentially a massive marble doorway, leading to nowhere. It once was part of the ancient temple of Apollo. It lies close to the port of Naxos on the islet of Palatia which was once a hill.

When travelling in the Mekong Delta, our driver took a detour to show us the Cai Dao temple in the town of Long Xuyen. The temple was nearing the completion of a renovation, but the people there allowed us to see inside. The worshippers there follow Caidaoism, a monotheist religion that promotes the idea that all religions are one. Caodaism is a new religion, having been founded in 1926, in Vietnam, but now has a growing worldwide following. While not prominent, within the temple were iconic references to Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. Spiritualism is deep in the Caidaoism culture. Around the base of the central prang (spire) at Wat Arun in Bangkok, Thailand, are perhaps fifty, maybe more, of these porcelain encrusted soldiers. The patterning on the prang is made up layers with the soldiers as one of those layers. who then appear to be holding up the next layer. While each soldier appears the same as its neighbour, there are subtle differences from one to the other. The prang is a remarkable testament to the power of faith and stunning to behold.

This is an image of the tallest of the five prangs (spires) at Wat Arun in Bangkok, Thailand. The prang is enormous, it dominates the Wat Arun complex, which consists of the five prangs, the temple, and several other buildings. I've been to Wat Arun twice, firstly in 2007 and again in 2019. In 2007, you could climb that staircase. It's very steep and gets much steeper as you climb farther. These days the staircase is closed-off, which is probably wise. The prang is covered in complex patterns that consist of colourful ceramic pieces embedded in the surface. When taking the photography, I was really struck by the symmetry, the underlying whiteness of the prang and the incredibly deep blue sky.

This image shows just a portion of the incredibly ornate main spire (prang) at Wat Arun in Bangkok, Thailand. The complex is full of amazing structures, many of which are covered with wonderful ceramic and seashell decoration. These decorations repeat across the entire edifice, but each repetition is slightly different from its neighbour, but you have to look carefully.

Pink Geisha

Bayon is one of the most visited temples in the vast Angkor Wat complex. The temple was part of Angkor Thom, itself the capital city of the Khmer kingdom, but was abandoned for centuries. Today only the most durable of the structures remain, but even they show the passage of time. That said, the ruins are remarkable and are a testament to the incredible architectural merit of the time. This image is of what appears to be a formerly covered passageway. A lintel remains over the portal, but otherwise, just the vertical stonework seems to have survived. But even in its ruin, it speaks to the power this place must have once held.
