The Thames At Maidenhead Magnets

A captivating image of the view over the River Thames from Ray Mill Island. On the right is the Boathouse Restaurant sitting beside Boulters Lock and which was once a watermill. Taplow and Maidenhead are joined by an elegant footbridge on Ray Mill Island. The lock itself was the subject of several paintings in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. My photograph has been finished as a coloured pencil drawing.

A view of the River Thames as we cross over the weir at Benson in Oxfordshire, This is part of the Thames Path National Trail. Behind us the river flows on to Wallingford where this walk started - and ahead is the town of Abingdon and the city of Oxford. However, immediately ahead on this walk is a riverside bistro - a lovely place to sit and relax with a coffee and pastry before retracing our steps.

The River Thames as seen from the north bank at Benson in Oxfordshire. Here we are just above the weir and lock - seen in the background and are just next door to The Waterside cafe and bistro - a lovely place to sit and look at the river. Benson is as well known perhaps for its RAF station just across the main road from here. A walk across the weir and lock along the Thames Path takes us to the ancient market town of Wallingford.

Looking over the parapet of Halfpenny Bridge in Lechlade at the final navigable stretch of the River Thames for launches and narrowboats. Now it quickly becomes shallower and narrower - so only small craft such as canoes can carry on travelling upstream. Lechlade is at the southern most edge of the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire and boasts the first (or last) lock on the Thames - St John's. Lechlade itself is a picturesque market town with plenty of welcoming cafés and pubs.

Seen here from the Thames Promenade at Reading, club boathouses along The Warren at Caversham. This stretch of the Thames is always busy with boats of all sorts, including racing boats, canoes and kayaks attached to the clubs.

A pleasure boat taking sightseers on a trip along the River Thames. Here it's passing the boathouses on the Caversham riverbank at Reading, Berkshire. This is a busy stretch of the Thames with boats such as this often negotiating their way through racing crews in training, private launches, canoeists and the ever-present flocks of swans and geese! This lovely old market town is about six miles south of Oxford, the river from here making its way towards Wallingford and Reading. St Helen's parish church lies next to the river. Dating from the early C12th, it is notable for being the second widest church in England and having five aisles!

A view downriver at Marlow on Thames in Buckinghamshire captured on an autumn afternoon. The suspension bridge spanning the river was constructed in 1832 and was designed by William Tierney Clark' It was the prototype for the Szechenyi Bridge in Budapest and bears a plaque linking it with that city. The landmark church of All Saints was built in 1835, replacing a 12th century building demolished in 1802. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

Here a yellow-painted widebeam barge is moored opposite Rod Eyot, an island sitting in the middle of the river. On the island are several chalets and a brick cottage - only accessible by boat.

Linking these two villages is a fine iron bridge built in 1923 which can be seen in the background. Here the Thames flows through a gap in the hills - the Chilterns to the north and the North Wessex Downs to the south, This is thought to be one of the most beautiful; stretches of the river. An impressionistic view of the Thames as it flows past Remenham in Berkshire, very near Henley-on-Thames. Having crossed the river at Henley we are now on the Berkshire bank walking along the Thames Path - a long distance footpath. Just ahead is Temple Island - the start of the Henley Royal Regatta course which is 1 mile 550 yards long, finishing just downstream of Henley Bridge. Temple Island, is named after its folly, built as a fishing lodge ion 1771 and now used for such things as corporate events. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A digital art view of the Thames Path as it wends its way towards the village of Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. The Thames Path is a national long distance trail 184 miles (296 km) long which starts at Kemble in Gloucestershre near one of the attributed sources at Thames Head (the other being Seven Springs). It finishes at the Thames Barrier flood defence in London. Here it passes through the Goring Gap - a narrow space between the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills.

The river scene at Goring on Thames as viewed from the road bridge. This is one of the most picturesque places along the length of the river at the point where it flows between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs known as the Goring Gap. A lock has been here since the 1500s when a local miller needed a head of water. The present lock was first constructed in 1787 and was rebuilt in 1921.

This is actually half of the bridge as a second identical length crosses the river to the Berkshire bank at Streatley-on-Thames. This is the view from the Thames Path National Trail which starts life at Cricklade in Gloucestershire and finishes at the Thames Barrier in London. This particular bridge was constructed in 1923. A previous toll bridge which dated from 1837 in turn replaced a ferry.

Looking across the River Thames at Lechlade in Gloucestershire, towards the parish church of St Lawrence. This picturesque market town, at the southernmost tip of the Cotswolds, is also the highest navigable point on the Thames. Further west and it becomes increasingly narrower and shallower. St John's Lock just down river from here is the first (or last if you're travelling westward) on the Thames. This is a digital art image with added textures.

This area is a favourite of artists with canvas and/or camera - including the great JMW Turner. The Thames Path - a long distance National Trail - stretches from Cricklade in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier in London.

Looking upstream from the road bridge to Goring over the River Thames at Streatley. On the left are the newly refurbished buildings of the Swan Hotel. Its origins date from the C17th when it was apparently opened by the first owner, Francis Swan. In 1970 it was famously bought by Danny La Rue. The present owners have recently extensively refurbished it. The Thames path skirts the hotel before continuing along the river bank to Cleeve Lock and on to Wallingford.

This stretch of river is famous for rowing, having produced Olympic champions such as Sir Steve Redgrave.

Marlow, on the north bank of the River Thames in Buckinghamshire, captured from just above the lock and weir late one afternoon in Autumn. The river leads the eye towards All Saints church, the spire being a distinctive landmark in the area. Also in the background is the suspension bridge constructed in 1832. The parish church of St Mary in the Thames-side village of Streatley in Berkshire, England. It lies very near the river and is almost next to the bridge linking Streatley with Goring. The church dates from the 13th century but was largely rebuilt in the mid 1800s as it was becoming rather dilapidated. However, many of the original building materials were used such as stone and the flint used for facing. At this time the nave roof was heightened and the clerestory windows added to give more light. At the end of the day the last rays of sun lighting the boathouses belonging to sports clubs based on the Thames at Caversham, Reading. This stretch of river is often busy with rowing crews, kayakers and canoeists training, but now all is quiet and the boats are stored.

Looking along the River Thames at night towards Wandsworth Bridge

A digital art image of The Thames Path at Reading Bridge connecting the town of Reading in Berkshire with Caversham on the north bank of the River Thames. Originally there was just one bridge, Caversham Bridge, just further upstream but as the main town absorbed the village of Caversham in the early 1900s, a new bridge was deemed necessary and this structure was finally opened in 1923.

The new foot and cycle bridge over the River Thames at Reading in Berkshire, England, just upstream from the busy road crossing at Reading Bridge. The footbridge, named Christchurch Bridge as the result of a poll, links Caversham to the north with Reading and in particular the station on the south bank. The name reflects historic links with Christchurch Cathedral in Oxford. The bridge was opened in 2017 by the Mayor of Reading with an inaugural game of poohsticks!

Abingdon is situated between Oxford and Didcot and was an important centre in medieval times, particularly because of the abbey of which a few buildings remain. The backwater as the Thames divides above the lock and weir at Goring on Thames in Oxfordshire. This was once the supply of water to the mill where it still rushes through the sluices to the wheel pit. Here, beside the boathouses lining the river bank, craft of all types are moored - now probably for the winter! In this view captured on a day in early October the lock keeper's cottage can be seen in the background.

The Thames at Richmond, April 2019 The River Thames at Richmond, West London, England. The imposing building on the opposite bank of the river is the Star & Garter Home, built in 1924 on the site of a former hotel. An apartment at the Star & Garter will set you back in the region of two million pounds. Date: 19th April 2019.

An impressionist's view of a launch travelling up the River Thames passing the parish church at Bisham in Berkshire. The 12th century parish church of All Saints stands on the banks of the Thames and is next door to Bisham Abbey, the National Sports Centre. Unsurprisingly, racing boat crews can often be seen training on the Thames here. This launch might well have come from the nearby Buckinghamshire town of Marlow-on-Thames - just downstream.
