73th Birthday 1947 Gift Vintage Classic

Two body styles were available for 1947 GMC trucks - this one was made during the first part of the year after production restarted after the war. This is a photo of a truck I inherited. They don't make quality like this anymore!

I think I saw this used as Biff's car in the first Back to the Future.

On Saturday, November 22, 1947, a war-surplus shop called Chubby & Tubby at 3333 Rainier Avenue S. held its Grand Opening in Seattle. The business -- which is initially based in a set of metal military Quonset huts on a corner lot (formerly site of a Signal gas station) in Seattle's Rainier Valley neighborhood -- had actually been open for about five weeks. But it seems that the two rotund owners -- Woodrow ("Woody") "Tubby" Auge (d. 1989) and Irvin "Chubby" Frese (d. 1997) -- still had a few organizational wrinkles to iron out before making things official: In fact for those first five start-up weeks the company was actually called "Tubby & Chubby."

The unusual thing about this truck (which I own) is that while it is a 1947, the body style is a 1946. 1947 was the first year after the war that these trucks were available to civilians and the style - especially the grill design - was changed sometime during the first part of the production year.

Post-war America and new super highways brought about a new-found interest in traveling, so roadside diners started popping up in key locations from coast to coast. One such place in Elkton, Maryland on the freshly completed US 40 was the Elkton Diner, a modern deco style eatery which also played host as a Trailways bus stop. Positioned almost dead center between New York and Baltimore, Elkton Diner was a popular stop for highway travelers for years before being consumed in a fire in 1962.
