Looking across Lake Taupo to Mts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, all comparatively young volcanoes (less than 500,000 years old) and still active, Ruapehu having erupted some 60 times since 1945. Mount Taranaki, New Zealand This is a 2518m high active but quiescent stratovolcano which commenced activity some 135,000 years ago.
