A statuesque, blond Teutonic goddess, Vampira (born Maila Nurmi) preferred to run with the weirdos, turning horror costuming into fashion and setting the stage for goth. Nurmi would have turned 100 years old on Dec. 11, 2022. Her birthday was marked with events around Los Angeles, including a gathering at Hollywood Forever and screenings of Plan 9 from Outer Space and Ed Wood at the American Cinematheque. This is the poster I created to promote the various birthday events.

The film was shot in black-and-white in November 1956 (under the shooting title Grave Robbers from Outer Space) and premiered on March 15, 1957 at the Carlton Theatre in Los Angeles. Re-titled Plan 9 from Outer Space, it went into general release in April 1959 in Texas and several other Southern states before being sold to television in 1961. Plan 9 From Outer Space is generally considered to be "the worst movie ever made".
