Produced as a photograph taken of Christmas fairy-lights in a Manchester City Center street, at night. By intentionally moving the lens whilst the shutter was open, an impression of movement was captured, each single light source appearing to stream and swirl as the camera moved and the lens zoomed. Often called 'Painting With Light', the 'happy' accidental result is an amazingly vibrant explosion of colour.

Creation of Adam. This fresco artwork (pigment applied to wet plaster) was painted onto the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City, Rome, Italy, sometime between 1508 and 1512. It depicts the moment that God (right) gives the newly created Adam (left) his human soul via their touching fingertips. The artist was Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), a Renaissance sculptor, architect, painter and poet.

Human cell. Coloured transmission electron micro- graph (TEM) of a cross-section through a normal human cell. At above centre is the nucleus (large oval) containing genetic material in the form of DNA. Surrounding the nucleus is cell cytoplasm filled with endoplasmic reticulum. The endo- plasmic reticulum (ER) is a complex system of membranes which form a network of flattened cisternae (cavities). These function as reservoirs and channels for the storage and transport of substances through the cytoplasm. Here, the ER is coated in tiny particles known as ribosomes, responsible for the synthesis of cell proteins. Magnification: x10,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
