Monarch Butterfly, (Danaus plexippus) ,newly emerged from chrysailis. Monarch butterflies are an iconic species, easily recognized by their large and vibrant orange wings. The brilliantly-coloured Monarch is a summer breeder in many areas of southern Canada, and most Canadian-born adults head to the highlands of central Mexico to overwinter. It takes four generations of Monarchs to make it to Canada during the spring migration. The fourth generation is different and can live up to nine months, and this is the one that needs to find milkweed in your yard. These are also the butterflies that will migrate south for winter to either Mexico or southern California.
