Numerous ships have been wrecked on the dangerous and sometimes fog-bound cliffs around Hartland Point as the mighty Atlantic pounds the shoreline, exerting a pressure estimated at up to 4 tons per square foot. The lighthouse here was built by Trinity House in 1874, to guide shipping entering the broad mouth of the Bristol Channel. The awesome 325 foot high rocky outcrop towering above the lighthouse was known to the Romans as the 'Promontory of Hercules'. Lundy Island can be seen on the horizon a dozen miles away.
