Description: Beginning in the 1840s, British colonists imported camels from the Canary Islands, India, and Afghanistan to help explore and supply Australia's harsh interior. More than 2,000 Afghan cameleers accompanied the animals, creating a transportation network that became vital to outback life. Camels hauled freight and supplies across some of the continent's most remote terrain until motor vehicles replaced them in the 1930s.
