The European Shorthair (or just European) originated in Sweden. It became a unique breed in 1949 after confusion with the British Shorthair necessitated differentiation. The European Shorthair is essentially the naturally-occurring domestic cat of Europe and is closely related to other short-haired cat varieties.

Cat breed historians aren't sure when the two breeds diverted, or what breed was bred with the Siamese to give the Balinese it's luscious hair, but nothing about all of that stops this from being an old, beautiful, noble breed!
