Who Is Watching Who ©Debra Martz Green Jays are fairly skittish, coming out into the open and quickly flying back into the safety of the thick trees. I was behind a tree trunk and this Jay had been watching my camera lens from some trees farther back. It slowly moved closer, one tree at a time, until it finally landed on a branch so close I couldn't get its full body in my lens. A Jay of the tropics whose range barely stretches to southern Texas. The snow had been falling for a number of days so we had many birds coming to the backyard for food and warm water that we kept heated. This little American Goldfinch left the large groups on the feeders and it appeared it was just ready for a nap! Majestic Young Eagle Departure by Debra Martz For me, even at a young, sub-adult age, this Bald Eagle appears majestic. It became the highlight of a day of bird watching. We had decided it was time to head home but why not make one more drive by the lake area behind the cabins? What a great decision! We were turning right into the parking area and stopped quickly at the sight of this Eagle on the bare tree branches. I very quietly exited the truck and was so appreciative that this regal beauty stayed at the top of this dead tree long enough for me to snap about a dozen images before and during its departure. Handsome Mourning Dove by Debra Martz The bluish crown, neck colors and bright blue eye ring of this male were just gorgeous. Birds, especially males, get much more colorful during breeding season. The female is more brownish overall with muted blue eye ring; they each have the black dots on the back. Most everyone in the US has this bird but it was just sitting there on the rock looking so pretty that I couldn't resist several shots. Journey of a Cormorant Through a Sunlit Sky by Debra Martz A trip over the the Great Salt Plains in northern Oklahoma rewarded me with the return of a number of Double-crested Cormorants already migrating back north. There were clouds yet the sun was bright. The one in the front is an adult and the the back one is somewhere around 2 or three years old based on its different plumage. Boca Chica Beach is located on the Gulf of Mexico at the far southern tip of Texas. Snowy Egret Performance by Debra Martz It might look like a performance but it's their attitude about territory that gets them up in the air and running sideways like this. Incoming one wanting to take over the fishing spot where the other was being successful. If there are several in close proximity, you will most likely get a show like this! Captured below the spillway at the Great Salt Plains State Park in northern Oklahome. Great Tailed Grackle Perched ©Debra Martz When there are multiple Grackles, these birds are very noisy but this one just slipped in without me hearing it. I was scanning the upper parts of the trees when I noticed him and liked the starkness of what I was seeing; just one dark somewhat iridescent bird on the bare branches and overcast sky. Verdin Snagging Insects From the Agarita by Debra Martz Many songbirds enjoy the fruits of the Agarita plant and/or the insects which the plant attracts as well and we were fortunate enough to have one in our campsite. I was able to watch this Verdin come and go from the comfort of my lawn chair at South Llano River State Park...a park located near Junction, Texas in the Hill Country. Feathered rooster like monster feelin' cocky. Flying feathered monster screaming feelin' cocky. Angry bird monster for funny irony. People who like funny puns about roosters will love it!

Yutyrannus huali lived in what is now China during the Early Cretaceous (124.6 million years ago). An early relative to the famed T.rex, it is known from three nearly complete fossil skeletons that were found together and show a surprising amount of detail, including the presence of a feathered covering over most of their bodies. At adulthood Y. huali measured at around 29.5 feet in length and weighed in at about 1.2 tons, making it the largest dinosaur yet discovered with direct evidence of feathers.

Daydreaming Dove by Debra Martz I was bird watching while sitting inside a bird blind. This White-winged Dove landed on this small branch and looked upward for a bit. They are vegetarians and commonly eat above ground. Perhaps it has its sights on a nice large seed or a berry instead of daydreaming. One of our local Chiltern red kites taking off from the bell cote of an old disused church, lit by the late afternoon sun. The red kite (milvus milvus) was, not long ago, on the edge of extinction in England but a highly successful breeding and re-introduction programme has seen them flourish and they can frequently be seen soaring and circling above.

It has been a very cold winter in northern Oklahoma and much of the USA this year. We started the day wiwth -11F but fortunately the heater in the watering bowl for the birds is keeping water thawed and warm for them. This European Starling had just finished getting a drink and turned to depart.
