Toad Hall 482 Castro Street San Francisco, California 94114 opened on May 28, 1971, Memorial Day weekend, named Toad Hall after the home of one of the characters from Kenneth Grahame’s 1908 children’s book The Wind in the Willows, an awkward character who never felt at ease with the other characters – a nod to the homosexual undertones some believe the book to have, and, because of the toadstool on the bar’s shingle, perhaps also to psilocybin mushrooms. Jason Phillips, a local artist, painted a mural depicting Toad’s adventures that was hung on the wall behind the bar.

PEGASUS San Antonio

The Continental Baths was a gay bathhouse in the basement of The Ansonia Hotel in New York City, which was operated from 1968-1976 by Steve Ostrow. It was advertised as reminiscent of "the glory of ancient Rome". While the baths utilized the Ansonia's lavish Gilded Age décor for a Roman style bath, it is probably best remembered as being an influential offbeat music venue.

Established in November 1966, The Black Cat Tavern was a gay bar located in Los Angeles, California's Silver Lake neighborhood. Two months later, on New Year's Eve, several plainclothes LAPD officers infiltrated the tavern. After arresting several patrons for kissing, the undercover officers began beating several revelers, ultimately arresting fourteen patrons for assault and public lewdness. With no resolve for those wrongfully attacked and arrested, a civil demonstration of over 200 people to protest the raids was held on February 11 outside The Black Cat Tavern. This was one of the first demonstrations in the U.S. protesting police brutality against members of the LGBT community, preceding the Stonewall riots by over two years.
