5428 steaming out of Grosmont Station on the North York Moors Railway. This steam train, part of LMS Class 5 designed by Sir William Stanier, first entered service in 1937. The engine is named 'Eric Treacy' after a Bishop of Wakefield who was an eminent railway photographer. It's just returned to service on the NYMR after a boiler service.

It could be 1965! A class 25 Sulzer Bo Bo in British Railways two tone green livery, pulls a rake of BR red coaches through lush green moorland in Yorkshire. BR Class 25 D7628 built by Beyer Peacock in Manchester in 1965 and named Sybilla in preservation is the locomotive in the photograph seen here on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Steaming out of Grosmont Station on the North York Moors Railway on it's way to Pickering, sporting 'wartime black' livery, LNER Class A4 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley is one of the most well known preserved stream trains, originally built for the London North Eastern Railway.

Storm brewing Over Pink Heather On The Yorkshire Moors It takes a special kind of plant to thrive in moorland areas, where the weather is often cold, wet and windy. Heather – an evergreen shrub with twiggy stems – covers our open moorland. Usually lots of heather plants grow together, forming a thick, bushy carpet, sometimes up to half a metre tall. This helps the plant to survive strong winds. Heather also has tiny, narrow leaves shaped like the needles on a Christmas tree, which stop the plant from losing too much water as the winds blow across the moors. Nectar from heather flowers makes excellent honey, and local beekeepers often bring their hives on to the moors in late summer when the heather comes into bloom. By Paul T...

Surrounded by purple heather on Heygate Bank overlooking Rosedale Abbey is The Millenium Cross, one of the latest additions to the crosses of the North Yorkshire Moors. There is an ancient tradition of erecting crosses in remote locations across the moorland, sometimes used a way markers for those travelling across the moors on foot. Surrounded by moorland heather in Summer, Castleton village lies in the valley of the River Esk on the North York Moors, close to Danby, The was a medieval castle in the village which probably accounts for its name. The picture was taken from the edge of Commondale Moor when the surrounding moorland heather was in full bloom.

Built in the early 1900's the P3 0-6-0 steam engines were powerful trains that were used mainly for goods transport as well as working transporting coal from North Eastern coal fields. This example was retired in 1967 when it was working as a goods train around the coalfields in Sunderland.

Little Langdale is a valley in the Lake District, England containing Little Langdale Tarn and a hamlet also called Little Langdale. A second tarn, Blea Tarn, is in a hanging valley between Little Langdale and the larger Great Langdale to the north.

Named after Sir Nigel Gresley, one of Britain's most famous steam locomotive engineers, this A4 class steam train entered service in 1937 and was retired in 1966, since when it's been maintained by a group of dedicated steam train enthusiasts. The original Danby Beacon was constructed in the 17th Century to warn of an impending French Invasion. Since then, it's been the location of an early RAF radar station and now is used as a reference point by thousands of visitors and walkers each year. The present beacon is a recent replacement which was manufactured locally in Middlesbrough. The flame-shaped basket is made out of blued stainless steel, mounted around a cup that is decorated with bronze. The sea is just visible to the right

The remains of a capstan winch at the abandoned Sikehead Lead Mine located at Burnhope, County Durham. The winch stands at the top of the Ellen shaft where lead was hauled from the mine.

Roseberry Topping is instantly recognisable on the edge of the North York Moors. The present shape was created in 1912 when part of Roseberry Topping's summit collapsed. There are several routes to the top of the hill with views over the Cleveland Plain. It's suggested that the name is derived from Viking name for the hill which has been suggested as 'Odin's Rock'

One of the most photographed jettys in the Lake District. Ashness Jetty lies on Derwentwater in the Borrowdale Valley. Stunning reflections can be captured, especially when the water is still. Whillian Beck runs over the the Eskdale Moor of the western Lake District in the county of Cumbria, England coming from the surrounding Scafell mountain range and the Bournmoor Tarn, where it runs alongside The Coffin Route. Looking past the small wooden bridge, the Scafell range begins to appear on the right and, in the distance Wasdale Head, with Yewbarrow visible. The walk up passed the impressive Grey Mares Tail waterfall which is located on the road between Moffat and St Mary's Loch, in Dumfries and Galloway, leads you to the view onto Lochcraig Head.
