Description: Egyptian scarabs are really dung beetles. Khepri, the ancient Egyptian god of the morning sun, rebirth, and creation was the inspiration for this symbolism. Khepri rolled the sun across the horizon at daybreak like the beetle rolled its dung. The entire Egyptian civilization was always oriented towards solar deities. After all, their lush oasis was surrounded by vast, arid deserts where such beetles proliferate. In that light, this animal was a good one to honor and emulate!

Description: A June bug! These big heavy red-brown beetles show up in Maine almost exactly on June 1st every summer. You can hear them every night thunking their big hard bodies against the windows as long as the lights are lit, and the sound brings happy summer vibes, rather than being annoying. As a kid, I loved catching them.
