Scarab beetles lay their eggs in a pellet which they roll along and the Egyptians saw this action as an image of the sun and its course through the heavens, rolled by a gigantic beetle. Scarabs are associated with the Egyptian god, Khepri because it was Khepri that pushed the sun across the sky. The scarab beetle became an ancient Egyptian symbol for rebirth, the ability to be reborn. Each day the sun disappeared, always to rise again and be reborn the following day. from the middle kingdom onwards scarabs were popular in amulets & other jewellery. Description: Egyptian scarabs are really dung beetles. Khepri, the ancient Egyptian god of the morning sun, rebirth, and creation was the inspiration for this symbolism. Khepri rolled the sun across the horizon at daybreak like the beetle rolled its dung. The entire Egyptian civilization was always oriented towards solar deities. After all, their lush oasis was surrounded by vast, arid deserts where such beetles proliferate. In that light, this animal was a good one to honor and emulate!
Description: A June bug! These big heavy red-brown beetles show up in Maine almost exactly on June 1st every summer. You can hear them every night thunking their big hard bodies against the windows as long as the lights are lit, and the sound brings happy summer vibes, rather than being annoying. As a kid, I loved catching them.
