Stax Records is an American record company, originally based in Memphis, Tennessee. Founded in 1957 as Satellite Records, the label changed its name to Stax Records in 1961. It also shared its operations with sister label Volt Records. Stax was influential in the creation of Southern soul and Memphis soul music. Stax also released gospel, funk, and blues recordings. Renowned for its output of blues music, the label was founded by two siblings and business partners, Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton. It featured several popular ethnically integrated bands (including the label's house band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s) and a racially integrated team of staff and artists unprecedented in that time of racial strife.

On November 7, 2008, A&B Sound officially announced that it had gone out of business, joining a number of other now-defunct Canadian music chains, including A&A Records and Sam the Record Man. Since the final store closed in late 2008, A&B Sound's remaining inventory was in limbo, with a briefly advertised sale in its Abbotsford location cancelled without explanation. However, in late June 2011, the inventory resurfaced; Able Auctions in Vancouver was liquidating the remaining stock on Saturday, June 25.

Bop Street Records first opened on Seattle's Aurora Avenue in 1979, later moved to Ballard Ave in 1984, and moved again in 2010, though just a few blocks away to Market Street. The store was a favorite with collectors who loved finding rare gems among Bop Street's extensive 500,000 recordings, but was also just a great place to stop in to buy records. Bop Street's prestige extended well beyond Seattle’s borders, being named as one of the best five record stores in the country, though sadly, global events of 2020 forced the store to close several years ahead of the owner's intended retirement.

A&B Sound was founded by Fred Steiner in 1959. The first store was located in downtown Vancouver, and in 1970 it moved to 556 Seymour Street. The store initially sold televisions, stereos and radio equipment, adding music later that year.

Thomas A. Edison invented the phonograph, the first device for recording and playing back sound, in 1877. After patenting the invention and benefiting from the publicity and acclaim it received, Edison turned their attention to the development of electric lighting, playing no further role in the development of the phonograph for nearly a decade. Edison’s improved phonograph was released in 1888. The original records were wax cylinders which were later replaced by Blue Amberol cylinders, and finally, vertical-cut Diamond Discs, which would be the format that would lead to modern-day vinyl records. Until 1910 the recordings did not carry the names of the artists, making it all the more important to keep the record and the sleeve together.

Rites of Spring

Back in 1938 Max Silverman opened a record store at 1836 7th Street in Washington, D.C. under the name Waxie Maxie Quality Music Co. Silverman's store was an instant hit as he stocked it with all the latest recordings as well as those from up-and-coming musicians, including many black artists, something that was still not very common at the time. Silverman began holding jam sessions and live radio broadcasts in the storefront's window, a spot that attracted teens and young adults to the store and became known as the Maxie's goldfish bowl. Silverman would eventually change the store's name to Waxie Maxie's and open over 30 locations throughout the Washington Metropolitan area.
