In 1922, two friends formed a partnership to haul sand and gravel during the early Los Angeles boom. They started on credit, buying 15 dump trucks, but soon, the fleet grew to 26 units. In 1929, C&T added tankers to move petroleum. In 1936, they purchased Western which allowed them to move into dry freight, and then in 1956, purchasing Gillette Motor Freight had them changing names to Western Gillette Motor Freight and reaching Chicago and serving 1,400 cities in between. By the ’70s, the company had over 2,000 employees operating out of 52 company terminals in 15 States and a fleet of over 1,000 trucks. In 1976 the company was sold to Roadway, marking the end of Western Gillette, and C&T, as well as their signature 'sunshine service.'

Quadrel Brothers Trucking was founded by two brothers after returning from WWII. Based out of Rahway, New Jersey, Quadrel Brothers was a specialized tanker hauling company with both liquid and dry tankers that transported everything from fuel and chemicals, to potable water and foodstuffs, though probably not in the same tanker trailers.

If you lived in the south during the '50s through the '70s, you probably saw more than your share of 'The Big R' tankers running down the highways. Ryder Tank Line was founded in 1954 in Greensboro, North Carolina, and provided reliable contract tanker service throughout the southern states for nearly three decades.

Founded in 1980, Dillon Transport provided dry bulk and liquid tanker services to the agriculture, building products, industrial and energy sectors. Dillon Logistics, which did business as Dillon Transport, was headquartered in Burr Ridge, Illinois and had over 340 drivers and 323 trucks at its peak and operated 10 terminals throughout the Southern and Midwestern United States.

Founded in 1970 in Streator, Illinois, Luckey Trucking was a provider of dry bulk, liquid bulk, dry van transportation, warehousing, and logistics services to the chemical industry. Luckey’s operations included a trucking terminal, tank wash and more than 250 railcar locations. The company also operated warehouses that provided logistics services, and a network of six terminals located in Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

Founded in 1888 with a team of horse-drawn hauling wagons, Matlack Inc. was based in Wilmington, Delaware. Matlack would grow to become the largest tanker line in America, becoming known as the "Pipeline on Wheels." From petroleum and chemicals, to dry bulk, and food grade product, Matlack Inc. had the specialized tanker trailers and terminal network to help get it where it needed to be. Sadly, after more than a century of doing business, the Pipeline on Wheels went into bankruptcy and was bought up and sold off in 2001.
