In Japan, as earlier in China, the mythical Phoenix was adopted as a symbol of the imperial household, particularily the empress. This phoenix bird design illustrated the mythological bird that recycles its own life. When it perceives its impending death, the Phoenix ignites itself into a magnificent fire.
