WASH evolved from experimental FM station, W3XL, which was first licensed in September 1945 in Kansas City, and later moved to Washington, D.C. WASH debuted as Washington's second commercial FM station on December 17, 1946, initially relaying Overseas Service programming and broadcasting thrice-daily time signals while building their studio. In 1968, Metromedia acquired the station, trading news for an adult contemporary format. In the early '80s, the station attempted to do a Top 40/CHR format, publicized with a rather strange "WASH with the Stars" advertising campaign. After a few years with little success against D.C.'s established Top 40 stations, WASH returned to a full service adult contemporary format.

On March 17, 1981, First Media completed their pourchase of KBLE-FM, and flipped it to an automated Top 40/CHR format as "The Northwest's New 93 FM." On July 8, 1981, KBLE officially launched with live on-air staff. On April 2, 1982, the call letters were changed to KUBE, and the station became known as "KUBE 93 FM". Shortly after the switch to Top 40/CHR, KUBE shot up to the top 5 in the Seattle radio market ratings (occasionally reaching #1 in some books and target demographics) and would later become the dominant CHR station in the Seattle metropolitan area. KUBE primarily competed against two other Top 40/CHR stations in the Seattle metropolitan area, creating an intense rivalry between the three stations throughout the '80s.

If you grew up in Detroit in the '60s and '70s, you probably listened to CKLW, an AM radio station from just across the river in Windsor, Ontario. Each week, CKLW would distribute their Big 30 record list to numerous stores throughout the Motor City which included the list of albums that made their Big 30 list that week, based on their ongoing surveys and polls. This design is based on what is probably their longest running and most recognizable logo which was came out in 1970 and aside from being used on the actual printed Big 30 album lists, could be seen on stickers, hats, and of course, on t-shirts.

Birmingham's WAPI launched on December 1, 1947 as WAFM, and spent most of its time on air as varying forms of adult contemporary. After a sale in 1980, WAPI switched formats in August 1981 to become Birmingham's second album rock station under the new name of '95 Rock.' During the mid '80s, Top 40 regained popularity, and in 1984, the album rock format was dropped in favor of Top 40. First calling itself '95 FM,' by the end of the year, it was re-launched as 'I-95,' billing itself as 'Birmingham's Hit Rock.' Within a year, I-95 became the dominant Top 40 station in Birmingham.

Remembering great WCFL radio station in Chciago, Illinois. Originally founded by the Chicago Federation of Labor, thus the call letters, by the 1960's it was a Top 40 rock and roll station. WCFL had wonderful disc jockeys included Jim Runyon, Joel Sebastian, Dick Williamson, Jim Stagg, Ron Britain, Barney Pip, Ron Riley, Jerry G Bishop (who was also The Ghoul on TV), and the legendary Dick Biondi.

In 1968, a young comedian by the name of Bill Cosby began his long career with a syndicated radio series called “The Bill Cosby Radio Program.” Over 350 of the daily 5-minute comedy inserts were produced by Frank Buxton (who also doubled as the announcer and Bill’s “straight man”) and syndicated to over 200 teen-oriented (top 40) radio stations all over America on LP record. Bill and Frank improvised each episode, with sound effects provided by Jack Benny’s sound man, Gene Twombly. Recordings of the Bill Cosby Radio Program are extremely hard to find, as the LPs were likely considered by radio stations to be disposable. This design features the show’s very ’60s style logo that includes hand lettered type and a hip old school radio.

Remebering WIXY 1260 Radio Station in Cleveland, Ohio. Although WIXY 1260 AM was around for only 10 1/2 years, it played terrific music and had greatl disc jockeys. It also sponsored some wonderful concerts including bringing the Beatles to Cleveland. And we loved going to the record store every week and picking up the WIXY Top 60 Survey of all the latest songs.
