Design is from a vintage Japanese woodblock print of a Japanese Ukiyo-e. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. The term ukiyo-e translates as "picture[s] of the floating world".

This captivating woodblock print pays homage to the famous Japanese artist, Hokusai, and his iconic piece, The Great Wave. The print features the wind, powerful and devastating, as it circles around the forest, rendered in Hokusai's distinctive style. Learned that Van Gogh got inspired by woodblock prints from Japan when making the "Starry Night" piece so it is fitting to make my own version of it in ukiyo-e esthetics. That is why the Great Wave and Starry Night resonates to me so much! The broken lines, swirls and repeated fast strokes is eminent in these two masterpieces.

Kano Hideyori was a Japanese painter of the Kanō school in Kyoto. His famous painting, “Maple Viewers” depicts a group of people enjoying the maple trees in the city of Takao, just north of Kyoto.
