The Curfew Tower at Windsor Castle seen from the Eton bank of the River Thames in Berkshire. Windsor Castle is the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world and is the 'weekend residence' of the Queen and Royal Family. The original castle was a Norman motte and bailey construction - part of a ring of such castles encircling London. Later, King Henry I used it as a residence. This tower, originally built in the 1220s was used as a belfry from 1477 - granted by Edward IV.Eight bells hang there dating from 1612 to 1898. It is thought to date to the 11th century, within a few years after the battle. It tells the story from the point of view of the conquering Normans, but is now agreed to have been made in England.

The Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. There had apparently been a place of worship here fron the C7th but it was a Norman, Robert FitzHarmon who founded this abbey. Building started in 1102 and it was consecrated in 1121, housing a community of Benedictine monks.After the Dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII it became the parish church. The south side of St Laurence's church in the village of Tidmarsh, Berkshire, England. This lovely old C12th church has a superbly decorated Norman doorway within the porch; a Norman font, C13th lancet windows - two with the remains of medieval wall paintings and some rare floor tiles. The wooden bell cote is supported inside by sturdy oak beams intricately carved - apparently by the wife of a vicar in the C19th. A path by the church leads to the River Pang flowing to join the Thames at Pangbourne.

The walls of Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire as they rise above the River Swale. Building began in 1071 by the Norman Alan Rufus as a defence against uprisings in the North which had already incurred King William's wrath and retribution. Further improvements such as the 100ft high keep were puit in place by Duke Conan of Brittany - Rufus' great-nephew in the C12th. By the mid 1500s it had fallen out of use but with the rise of tourism was repaired in the 1800s and is a Grade1 listed building Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The castle at Brecon (Aberhonddu) standing above the River Honddu close to where it flows into the River Usk. This was one of the first stone castles in Wales, built by Bernard de Neufmarche in 1093. The Welsh, however, destroyed the town in the 1100s and so a stone shell keep and outer walls were built by the early 1200s. The section in the image dates from c.1300. In 1645 Parliament captured the castle and slighted (razed) the walls to prevent future defensive use. A digital pencil drawing.

A branch of the River Avon as it flows through the town of Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. The town stands at the point where the Avon meets the River Severn - a very strategic position in ancient times! It has a distincly medieval feel with many buildings dating from that time. In the background is Tewkesbury Abbey with one of the tallest Norman towers in existence. The Battle of Tewkesbury (1471) in the Wars of the Roses was decisive with the House of York triumphant under Edward IV. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The church of St Botolph at Swyncombe in South Oxfordshire. This lovely old church in the Chiltern Hills lies about 4.5 miles from Wallingford and is fairly close to the B481 running between Nettlebed and Watlington. Seen here with a springtime carpet of primulas, the outside of the church is typically early Norman with a round apsidal end to the chancel. Inside it was restored in 1850. The image has been finished as a coloured pencil drawing.

Produced in the style of a chalk drawing, cows and their calves quietly grazing on the green grass of the water meadows outside the walls of St Cross Hospital. This lovely old building stands near Winchester, Hampshire - its almshouses providing accommodation fror 25 elderly men. Rising above is the magnificent Norman tower of the church, echoing that of Winchester Cathedral just a short distance away.

The pathway leading from a country lane to the Norman church of St Nicholas at Ibstone, Buckinghamshire. This ancient church sits surrounded by trees on the edge of the village of Ibstone. The village, which is a mere six miles from High Wycombe, is reached through narrow country roads and lies on the edge of a hillside in the Chilterns Hills overlooking spectacular wooded valleys.
