Description: Roll-Surf brand skateboards were made by the Midonn Company in Hossegor, France. Midonn has previously made rollerskates and ice skates, but in 1964, jumped into the burgeoning skateboarding craze with a board of their own manufacture that was largely sold in department stores both throughout France and abroad.
Description: Skateboarding got off the ground in the late ’50s as boys began nailing roller skate trucks to boards and as interest in skateboarding continued to build, various brands began offering increasingly better commercially made skateboards. 1964 saw the first issue of Skateboarder Magazine as numerous exhibitions and contests swept the West Coast. Sidewalk surfin’ was way in and continued to spread far beyond California as kids of all ages took to the streets, enjoying the fun activity of skateboarding.
Description: In Dana Point, California, Bill Richards and his son Mark invented the first skateboard in 1958 by attaching a set of roller skate trucks and wheels to a wooden board. The Richards’ began selling their boards at their North Hollywood surf shop for $8 a piece in 1959, calling them 'Roller Derby Skate Boards.' Initially selling about ten a week, sidewalk surfing moved from a niche to a national sensation in the '60s, and by the end of 1965, the United States had over 15 million skaters, and the industry generated $100 million in annual sales. Not bad coming from a single idea hobbled together from existing components in the garage, huh?
