Charisma Records – also known as 'The Famous Charisma Label' – was a British record label founded in 1969 by former journalist Tony Stratton-Smith. He had previously acted as manager for several British rock bands including The Nice, The Bonzo Dog Band and Van der Graaf Generator. The first release was an LP by Rare Bird, in November 1969, that delivered Charisma its first hit single in early 1970. The label would go on to sign some of the most successful acts of the '70s, producing an envious string of hits. Charisma's vinyl records featured a John Tenniel illustration of the Mad Hatter on the labels, leading to them sometimes referring to themselves (and be referred to) as 'The Mad Hatter Platter People.'
