When seen at a distance, they appear black but close up and with the sun shining on them they are beautiful. And though they may be beautiful, they can be a pest, especially when they arrive at backyard feeders in large groups. They are not native to the USA but they are the most abundant of all songbirds with a range from Alaska to Mexico. 100 birds were set free in New York's Central Park in the early 1890s by a group who wanted America to have all the birds that Shakespeare ever mentioned. Pelicans In the Morning Light of the Sun and Moon ©Debra Martz It was October 12th and the numbers of migrating birds continued to climb. More American White Pelicans and now seeing more Double-crested Cormorants in the mix. Daydreaming Dove by Debra Martz I was bird watching while sitting inside a bird blind. This White-winged Dove landed on this small branch and looked upward for a bit. They are vegetarians and commonly eat above ground. Perhaps it has its sights on a nice large seed or a berry instead of daydreaming. Make Room For Incoming @Debra Martz In Rockport, Texas there is a large stand of Live Oak trees that serves as a rookery each year during breeding season. It is across the street from the bay which is a source of food for the Herons making this an attractive place to nest. One Very Surprised Roadrunner by Debra Martz Astonished, amazed, startled, stunned, flabbergasted, shocked, stopped in its tracks, etc . The look was quite hilarious when it spotted me or maybe it was that big old black camera and a very long lens! Either way, it did a quick 90 degree turn and took off running! Tri-colored Heron Wind Blown by Debra Martz I had been watching one of these Herons earlier on the boardwalk for quite some time when decided I needed to move on ahead. I was walking out to a point observation deck when this one flew in and landed near me. Don't know if it was the same one or not but like how the wind was ruffling its feathers and the fact that it landed by that seashell. Young White Ibis Feeding in the Grass by Martz There was a family of Ibis feeding on insects in this grassy area located near the Intracoastal waterway in Port A, Texas. There were the all white adults, a few immatures and juveniles. Fading from green to orange is a little birdie graphic that is simple yet eye catching.

What can I say? There are times that you arrive when the bird departs. I made it to the bottom of the spillway where the Great Salt Plains Lake flows into the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River in N. Oklahoma; a place that many birds like to fish. Yellow-crowned Night Heron Resting On A Branch By Debra Martz I visit Estero Llano Grande State Park in south Texas several times a year for bird watching. Almost always find some Night Herons on the trail around Alligator Lake. And this January visit didn't fail me!! This heron was resting on this branch over the water just below the trail.

Common Gallinule at Edge of Water - Painterly by Debra Martz It's not often that I see the full length of the colorful legs and feet of the Galinule (Gallinula galeata) so I was quite pleased as this one posed on the outer edge of the water. I, also, liked the patterns made by the movement of the brackish marsh water at Leaonabelle Birding Center of Port Aransas, Texas. This was taken from the new boardwalk that runs in a different direction from the one that was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. Couch's Kingbird - Dragonfly for Lunch by Debra Martz We heard this kingbird calling as it flew through the treetops around noon at Estero LLano Grande State Park. Finally it landed up high, looked around for awhile, then swooped down and caught this dragonfly. This huge dragonfly!! It worked on it for a while, tossing and tapping on the limb in an effort to try and remove the wings. But in the end, ate the dragonfly, wings and all!!

American White Pelicans Early Morning Feeding by Debra Martz The Great Salt Plains Lake in northern Oklahoma is a wonderful place to catch many birds during Fall Migration. This variety of pelican arrives by the thousands at the end of September and in early October. They work together to herd fish, then go bottoms up like a dabbling duck for the catch. Hammond's Flycatcher by Debra Martz I already had plans to spend a week in south Texas bird watching and I knew I would go to one of my favorite places, Estero Llano Grande State Park. For some reason, I decided to call the park about a week before I was to arrive and ask how the birding had been. The ranger reported that it had been pretty good with 60-80 species being seen most days. I then ask if they had any specialty birds making an appearance....and they had. One was the Hammond's Flycatcher which it out of its normal range and the Tropical Parula. While I didn't manage to find the Parula, I did get the Flycatcher...a lifer bird for me!!!

Great Tailed Grackle Perched ©Debra Martz When there are multiple Grackles, these birds are very noisy but this one just slipped in without me hearing it. I was scanning the upper parts of the trees when I noticed him and liked the starkness of what I was seeing; just one dark somewhat iridescent bird on the bare branches and overcast sky. Proud Snowy Egret by Debra Martz There were a few dozen Snowies on this peninsula below the spillway. They are known for their attitude and territorial ways but this one was the winner hands down! It was either running or flying at each of the others in an attempt to make them leave this fishing spot. He was fairly successful at chasing off the majority. It had just attacked the one in the background which was walking away. Location: Great Salt Plains State Park in northern Oklahoma.
