Some portraits are directly based on the figures painted on the vault. Then I painted other faces trying to reproduce that style, and the characteristics that in my opinion distinguish it: the intense expression of the faces, the light and half transparent colors as if the aim was to let emerge the underlying drawing, the profile marked by a darker line, the background of a mostly uniform sky. When Francesca was here during early summer I painted her twice in acrylics and sold both paintings. She was in Las Negras again last week visiting her parents who have a villa here. They are from Belgium but Francesca lives and works in Dublin. She is very tall and has a grace which makes her a lovely model to paint. You find your time at the headquarters was often quiet and uneventful, unlike the very few instances of heading out into the field with your much more experienced colleagues. During a night shift you took your rounds after doing some paperwork, finding yourself stopping at a large portrait that hung in one of the corridors. The figure you see has a presence most ethereal, strong in their posture and with an intensity held in their rather peculiar eyes. There is no distinction as to who this is, or what artist may have been commissioned for it. You sense a feeling of calm yet uncertainty in your heart staring at it. Staring into those eyes. The only thing you see along with the large painting, is a small brass plaque that says:...
