I was walking through the bush, when all of a sudden a Tawny Frogmouth resolved out the background. In this painting I aim to capture the effective camouflage of this amazing bird.

Tawny frogmouths, Podargus strigoides, sit upright, completely motionless on branches, with their heads tilted up & eyes usually closed to slits. Their plumage is finely streaked & mottled in grey & brown. They are masters of camouflage. They look just like broken branches. They are not owls, but nightjars. They are widespread throughout Australia. This one was photographed in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. Canon 500D, Tamron zoom lens.

A Tawny Frogmouth - doing what Frogmouths do - staring! Although they look like an owl, they are actually a Nightjar. They do have the owl skill of sitting very still - pretending to be a branch.
