Quicksilver Messenger Service was an American psychedelic rock band formed in 1965 in San Francisco. The band achieved wide popularity in the San Francisco Bay Area and, through their recordings, with psychedelic rock enthusiasts around the globe, and several of their albums ranked in the Top 30 of the pop charts. They were part of the new wave of album-oriented bands, achieving renown and popularity despite a lack of success with their singles. Though not as commercially successful as their contemporaries, Quicksilver was integral to the beginnings of their genre. With their jazz and classical influences and a strong folk background, the band attempted to create an individual, innovative sound.

Jellyfish was a rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1989. The group was known for their blend of '70s classic rock and XTC-style power pop. They released two albums, Bellybutton (1990) and Spilt Milk (1993), that proved influential to many subsequent acts in a similar vein. During their five-year existence, Jellyfish attracted critical acclaim and a devoted cult following, but struggled against prevailing rock trends (hair metal and grunge), leading to them calling it quits in 1994.

The Summer of Love was a social phenomenon that occurred during mid-1967, when as many as 100,000 people, mostly young people sporting hippie fashions of dress and behavior, converged in San Francisco's neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury.

The Oakland Oaks were a charter member of the original American Basketball Association and the first West Coast basketball team to win a major professional championship. Formed in February 1967, the team played in the ABA during the 1967–68 and 1968–69 seasons at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The team colors were green and gold. The team was sold and moved to Washington, D.C. for the 1969–70 season, where it was renamed the Washington Caps.

Sopwith Camel was a band formed in 1965 that played a big part in the San Francisco psychedelic scene of the late '60s. The band is best known for being the second SF band to get a contract with a national label, and the first to have a Top 40 hit. Their self-titled first album was released in 1967 on Kama Sutra Records. The single "Hello, Hello" became the first hit to emerge from the San Francisco rock scene and reached 26 on the U.S. Hot 100 charts. A second hit, "Postcard from Jamaica," peaked at 88 on the Hot 100 in April 1967. The band was defunct by the end of 1967, but reformed in 1971 with all but one original member to record their second and final album, The Miraculous Hump Returns from the Moon.

More broadly, the Summer of Love encompassed hippie music, hallucinogenic drugs, anti-war, and free-love scene throughout the West Coast of the United States, and as far away as New York City. Hippies, sometimes called flower children, were an eclectic group. Many were suspicious of the government, rejected consumerist values, and generally opposed the Vietnam War. A few were interested in politics; others were concerned more with art or spiritual and meditative practices.

In the mid-60s, young people flocked to San Francisco's Haight and Ashbury neighborhood, attracted by the area's cheap rent. In 1965, the first hippie boutique opened at 1510 Haight Street in the Doolan-Larson Building. The storefront here was owned by a 24-year-old young woman named Peggy Caserta who named her place Mnasidika, a reference to the first known lesbians in written history (see The Songs of Bilitis by Pierre Louÿs). Among her friends and customers were counterculture artists and musicians, most of whom would go on to be big names, but all bought their jeans, tees, and other fashion essentials from her little neighborhood storefront. Mnasidika closed after the Summer of Love in 1968, but the space as it was remains today.
