This area, West Mills, was once a hive of activity where wool and woollen products were loaded and unloaded to and from canal boats to be transported to London via the Thames at Reading or to Bristol and its docks to be exported abroad. Now warehouses and workshops have been reaplaced by or converted into flats and houses and the boats are for leisure.

Carry on eastwards from here and you eventually reach Reading and the River Thames, Behind us the canal continues through Berkshire and Wiltshire to reach Bath and Bristol.

It has a rise and fall of 6ft 4 ins (1.93 m). The canal was made to link the two rivers, Kennet in the east and Avon in the west to enable goods to be carried from London to Bristol. Just upstream of Aldermaston Lock is this footbridge which spans the Kennet and Avon Canal linking two areas of housing but there is no access to it from the towpath. Along this stretch canal boats are moored. Just behind us is Aldermaston Lock and Aldermaston Wharf, once a busy industrial area with canal boats loading and unloading cargoes of agricultural goods, coal, wood, groceries and building materials. Pictured late on a spring afternoon, swing bridge no 35 on the Kennet and Avon Canal just upstream from Woolhampton in West Berkshire. The K&A which is 87 miles long was constructed to link Bristol with the River Thames at Reading giving a direct link to London. However, with the arrival of Brunel's Great Western Railway which runs next to the canal at this point, it gradually fell into disuse, many stretches becoming un-navigable. The canal was reopened for boat traffic in 1990.
