I have a big interest in North American wildlife, and since The Lion Guard is all about wildlife, I decided to make all the characters as North American animals! So here we have Beshte the Bison (the strongest), Bunga the Grizzly Bear Cub (the bravest), Ono the Bald Eagle (the keenest of sight), Fuli the Pronhorn (the fastest), and Kion the Wild Stallion (the fiercest.) The reason I made Kion a wild horse rather than a mountain lion is because I already had drawn him as a horse for my "Lion King characters as horses" series: unicornarama.deviantart.com/ar…. The Tree Swallows who visit Iona Island are intensely curious about humans, and this handsome fellow and accomplished aerialist--like several others of his kind--gave a small but rapt group of photographers plenty of closeup opportunities to capture their breathtaking beauty in dazzling detail.

That the Surf Scoters of White Rock Pier are habituated to the presence of humans is a bit of an understatement. These were a few of hundreds of these large black seaducks who routinely passed under the boardwalk during a crisp but sunny morning visit in early November 2019, giving great bird's eye views of that colorful and comically oversized schnoz that the ladies of his kind have found so fascinating for so long.

A dark, overcast day lends a painting-like effect to my photo of this Chestnut-Backed Chickadee (a West Coast "specialty"), who was perched on one of the fruit trees in the backyard and in no particular hurry to nab a seed from the hanging feeding stations. In the summertime, there may be as many as six of these chubby and inquisitive songbirds. Their song is sweeter and sounds almost like trickling water -- compared to the "disapproving" calls of the more numerous and flightier Black-Capped Chickadees.

The "golden light" was just starting to fade as I chanced upon this male Pileated Woodpecker, who was ignoring me for the most part as he performed fast, efficient excavations (from 6-8 feet away) to extricate his dinner! A great way to finish my first evening at Galiano Island over the 150th Canada Day 2017 weekend!

A male Green-Winged Teal enjoys the calm waters of Piper Spit/Burnaby Lake. This dabbling duck is tied with the Bufflehead, a diving duck, for the title of the smallest ducks in North America. Only at Burnaby Lake can we see these ducks literally (and quite fearlessly) at our feet, chasing ducks much bigger than themselves. Photographed in January 2015, just as the sunset was touching the waters of the Piper Spit.

To eat, or not to eat, that is the question. A Black-Capped Chickadee wonders if it should go for seed from hand A or hand B. Decisions, decisions. We did not get swarmed with these little cuties as we had during our last couple of visits to the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Ladner, British Columbia, Canada.

Though they have a legendary reputation for being extremely feisty, the Rufous hummingbirds seem to be subdued this year, stealthily sneaking in visits to the flowers before suffering the wrath of the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This beautiful little stranger was camping out in the California Lilac, and guarding her precious stash of nectar from within this large cage-like shrub.

The coyote is a close relative to wolves! In Native American folklore, the coyote is often depicted as a trickster using humor to rebel against social norms!

With his bright white cravat evoking a stylish old Elizabethan charm, this handsome bibbed domestic Mallard (of the Duclair designer "persuasion") was definitely the odd duck out at the local wildlife sanctuary. That didn't stop him from charming the photographers in his midst, and moving his way to the forefront of the feeding frenzy that included many, many wild Mallards.
