The Old Bridge

The Old Wye Bridge, also known as the 1816 Bridge crosses the River Wye to connect Monmouthshire (Sir Fynwy) in Wales with Gloucestershire, England. Constructed of cast iron on stone piers, it was designed and built by John Rastrick in 1816 to replace an earlier bridge which was gradually disintegrating. This handsome structure is now Grade 1 listed. This image was captured late afternoon in early October at low tide.

This elegant and sturdy bridge provides a link between Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire in England. It was constructed in 1816 and was designed by John Rastrick of Bridgenorth. It had to be tall and extremely strong as the tidal range here is one of the highest in the world, at times reaching 14 metres! Hence the massive pillars on which it is constructed.
