This illustration represents the Pleiades, a star cluster located in the constellation Taurus. This famous asterism was of mythic significance to cultures throughout the ancient world, and has gone by many names, including: Mǎo (Chinese), Thurayya (Arabic), Krittika (Hindu), Messier 45 (M45), Melotte 22, and of course, the Pleiades (the seven divine daughters of Pleione and Atlas) in Greek.

Pleiadum Constellatio

Pleiades (also known as Messier 45, M45, Subaru, Seven Sisters) is an open star cluster located in the constellation of Taurus. The cluster is dominated by hot blue stars, that have formed within the last 100 million years. Dust that forms a faint reflection nebulosity around the brightest stars is a cloud in the interstellar medium, through which the stars are currently passing. Picture was taken with newton 600mm f/4 telescope, modified DSLR, total exposure time: 3 hours.

This is a stack of 92 images combined to show the path of the stars as they rose over the mittens and Merrick Butte in Monument Valley, Arizona. The time span for the complete sequence was an hour. The red glow in the distance is, I believe, the lights of Bluff, Utah. The star cluster over the red glow, between the East Mitten and West Mitten, is Pleiades, also known as M45.

Rosette nebula (NGC 2237), optical image. This nebula is an emission nebula, known as the Rosette nebula because of its round, flower-like shape. Emission nebulae are clouds of gas and dust that are ionised by radiation from hot stars within them, causing them to glow. At the heart of the nebula (centre) is the cluster of young stars (NGC 2244) responsible for this ionisation. The strong stellar wind from these stars has cleared a hole around them. The whole Rosette nebula measures around 50 light years across; it lies approximately 4500 light years away in the constellation Monoceros.
