The seven species of New World (North and South America) vultures are featured in cute cartoon Birdorable style. These birds have an important role in keeping the environment clean. Unfortunately some species of vulture are endangered, like the near threatened Andean Condor and the critically endangered California Condor, both shown here along with the Black Vulture, King Vulture, Turkey Vulture, and the Greater & Lesser Yellow-headed Vultures.

Chimney Topper - Black and White by Debra Martz I was just getting ready to put my gear back in the truck when I saw a Turkey Vulture circling to the west of this old abandoned house. I thought maybe I can get a neat fly by if I wait just a few minutes more. Then I noticed its circling stopped and it headed directly for the house, the chimney in fact, for a landing! Happy happy was I. I stop to photograph this house most every visit to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge and get something a little different each time. I love turkey vultures. so much. this is from photos I took and sketches I did at dawn, by the railroad tracks in alsea area, they were all gathered in the trees looking a doe that had been struck (I found the doe by following their gazes for a while). 18x24" oil on canvas. unframed.

This is an illustration of nerve pain in my hip. There is a family of vultures nesting in the damaged nerves of my knee. Good things, complexity, can come from damage. Just like dead trees make a home for one of my favorite supposed omens of doom, the turkey vulture.
