This is a close-up image of the monumental equestrian bronze statue of King José I (the Marquis of Pombal), which is centerpiece of the Praça do Comércio square in Lisbon. King Jose I coordinated a massive rebuilding effort of the entire plaza and the arch after the great earthquake of November 1755 that was followed by a tsunami and a fire that destroyed most of Lisbon and many other buildings by the river.
