A beautiful Christmas vintage postcard from 1891 for by the Woolson Spice Company. This cute little girl has her arms filled with gifts and is dressed in a pretty red coat. The illustration is wonderfully done. I haven’t retouched the original in any way, so any signs of wear are left to achieve a more authentic vintage feel.

The Super S, also known as the Cool S, Universal S, Pointy S, Middle School S, Graffiti S, and by many other names, is a graffiti sign in popular culture that is typically doodled on teen’s notebooks or graffitied on walls. The exact origin of the Cool S is unknown, but it may have originated from the 1890 book, Mechanical Graphics, by professor Frederick Newton Willson. The symbol began appearing in greater numbers and frequency around the early 1970s as a part of graffiti culture, though it can be found much earlier in works like Hans Holbein’s large double-portrait, known as The Ambassadors from 1533.

The great fly scare of the 1890's was brought on by the new knowledge of germs in society. Flys were seen as one of the greatest spreaders of disease and germs. This also led to a change in fashion as they wanted to keep flys out, the same flys who were attracted to ladies long dresses which would be soaked in horse shit when they left the house so women started wearing shorter skirts.
