The Red-backed Kingfisher - Todiramphus pyrrhopygia - lives in drier regions, in semi-arid woodlands, mulga and mallee, spinifex and almost treeless country. Sometimes far from water. Found over most of Australia. Hunts from open perches; drops to the ground to take small reptiles or occasional small (mouse-size) mammals or large insects. Kingfishers are one of the most popular birds I paint and I can see why - particularly with this one. The colours are extraordinary. I love it.

A dark, overcast day lends a painting-like effect to my photo of this Chestnut-Backed Chickadee (a West Coast "specialty"), who was perched on one of the fruit trees in the backyard and in no particular hurry to nab a seed from the hanging feeding stations. In the summertime, there may be as many as six of these chubby and inquisitive songbirds. Their song is sweeter and sounds almost like trickling water -- compared to the "disapproving" calls of the more numerous and flightier Black-Capped Chickadees.
