Submitted to the 2019 CHANL Scientific Art Competition Honoring the late UNC Professor of Pathology, Dr. Emily S. Barrow, this fractal image represents both her love for flowering plants and her pioneering research on von Willebrand Factor (vWF). This image was completed on July 2, 2017, which would have been her 90th birthday. It can be perceived to illustrate the multimeric assembly of vWF monomers or subunits which are glycosylated (white “sugar coating”) according to our ABO blood types. High Molecular Weight Multimers are most procoagulant, protecting clotting Factor VIII and binding to platelets and collagen. I wasn't quite brave enough to make this totally black and white - hope the blue center makes the silver shades a little more effective. While the Mandelbrot sets and the curved silver orbit traps naturally suggested the name for this image, that name in turn reminded me of Jay Silverheels, the Native American actor who portrayed Tonto in the TV classic The Lone Ranger. Let us return now to those thrilling days of yesteryear to see Jay in action...selling Chevy Blazers?!?? ...
