The first in a set of similar pieces which would look good as a triage on the wall... this one is entitled "How Many CC's in a Cormorant" Flight and movement are often difficult to depict and often some captures are more striking than others... Working on both technique and timing at the RSPB allowed me to get a feel for avian movement and timing. With a fast shutter speed, you freeze movement... but that wasn't the objective here... Rather than freeze movement, I wanted to work with it... and as such create 'some sort of fluidity' within the image... 'A technique that I have tried and as yet - not mastered underwater due to differences in subject matter...' The eye, brain, hand coordination to press the shutter have some...

Journey of a Cormorant Through a Sunlit Sky by Debra Martz A trip over the the Great Salt Plains in northern Oklahoma rewarded me with the return of a number of Double-crested Cormorants already migrating back north. There were clouds yet the sun was bright. When I took this image, I thought of a Preacher about to give his sermon at a Pulpit. However, in reality, this Little Black Cormorant is actually drying his wings after diving for food. Taken at Walka Waterworks in Maitland in the Hunter Valley.

Large Gathering of Cormorants by Debra Martz After I made my way all the way to the top steps of the spillway and looked beyond toward the dam, I was quite surprised by this Gulp of Double-breasted Cormorants! Yes, I knew this was part of their fall migration but I had not seen them gathered on the edge of the dam like this previously. A group of cormorants has many collective nouns, including a "gulp", "flight", "rookery", "sunning", and "swim" of cormorants. This is map of the Galapagos Islands, which was the most famous destination of Darwin and the HMS Beagle, drawn in the style of antique maps with sailing ships, shark fins in the water, and a decorative border.

I found it rather odd to see this Double-crested Cormorant drying its wings while in the flowing water over the spillway. More commonly, this would be done on a rock, dock, shoreline or such. But this one seemed perfectly content in this location for wing drying. High winds churn up the dirts of the shallow lake bottom and even brought some heavy streaking flowing over from the upper tier of the spillway. Disorderly Conduct by Debra Martz Sort of looks like a chaotic mess of birds with no rhyme nor reason as to their movements. Some leaving by air, while some were landing and others moving across the water in all directions. All I know is that there were large numbers of Double-crested Cormorants and Ring-billed Gulls on the move during fall migration. There could be some other Gulls in this mix as I had seen Franklin and Herring Gulls earlier. Cormorants resting at the lake of Ioannina (Epirus, Greece). The lake of Ioannina ("Pamvotis" or "Pamvotida" lake) is beautiful with all kinds of weather, throughout the year. But when fog falls, so "thick" that you can "cut it with a knife" (as we Greeks say) then everything seems to "dematerialize", every things "out of time, out of space".

As I passed by this scene, in Cambria, California, several thoughts passed through my little mind. I'll let you make your own interpretation, but I will say this, I wish we humans could all coexist so peacefully.

Well Worn Pilings Portland Maine by Debra Martz The pilings, originating from piers of the past, remain intact in a collective heap at the cruise terminal in Portland, Maine, even after the passage of many years. I found them interesting in their weathered and worn state, and even more so when a single cormorant landed on one. Amazing to me was its "matching colors" of silver, black, and orange.
