Stephen Crane (a.k.a. Steve Crane, Steven Crane) started out as bit actor in Hollywood in the 30's and became better known for being one of Lana Turner's ex-husbands than for any of his roles. Realizing his limited acting skills, Steve Crane turned his charm and energies to the restaurant business and in 1953 bought out 'The Tropics' in Beverly Hills. Taking his cue from Trader Vic's and Don the Beachcomber, Steve created his own Polynesian themed restaurant 'The Luau'. The restaurant quickly became a hit and a 'must see' Hollywood celebrity hot spot. Eventually Steve Crane would be approached by Sheraton to create a Polynesian themed restaurant for the hotels to compete with Hilton and their association with Trader Vic's.

Pickle Bill's Bar-B-Q opened its doors in 1941 at 2712 Pico Blvd in Santa Monica. From the sawdust-covered floors to the giant pickle on the restaurant's marquee, Pickle Bill's truly was 'soooo different' from every other establishment at the time. It offered a true roadhouse experience right in town that managed to do the impossible by attracting raucous crowds and families alike. Of course, it wasn't just the experience that drew them in - it was the food. Aside from all kinds of barbeque, Pickle Bill's menu included steaks, seafood, and their famous French dip sandwiches.

The Hewitt Street storefronts at the American Hotel housed many Los Angeles businesses over the years — the Golden West, Tony's Café and Joe Pirrone's to name a few. In 1973, Alfonso Vasquez opened a bar there, rather uncreatively calling it Al's Bar. Al's began as a hangout for local truck drivers and factory workers that would stop by after a long day for a cold beer and a game of pool. A shift in neighborhood demographics led to a change in the bar's clientele in the '80s. The hotel became a haven for artists in need of cheap live-in studio space, and Al's was happy to serve these free spirited souls, eventually adding a small stage and hosting bands. Al's quickly became known more as an intimate music venue than a dive bar.

Established in 2004, Branagan's Irish Pub was located at 213 N. Harbor Blvd. in Fullerton, California. Offering the perfect mix of American tavern favorites and traditional Irish pub fare, Branagan's was a great place to grab a hot meal. Of course, being a pub, they also had an impressive number of beers on tap, so a lot of folks just went there to get loaded.

The Saddle Rack originally opened on August 13, 1976 as San Jose's only authentic country roadhouse. The Rack, as locals called it, quickly became known for country music, strong drinks, line-dancing, and Tex-Mex cuisine, which turned out to be a winning combination. This quirky joint's Southern-style hospitality was what kept locals coming back, but once they began booking live music, it became a premier country music nightspot that pulled people in from all over the Bay Area and beyond. Sitting on six and a half prime acres, the owner received an offer he couldn't refuse, and sold the property, leading to its closure in 2001. The Rack would return in 2003, reopening in an 18,000-square-foot former hot tub store in Fremont.

The Dunes Cantina opened its doors in 1936 at 16232 Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, California. It was dive bar that maintained it's wild west roots and was really only known to the few regulars that called it home over the decades, but that all changed after it got a cameo appearance in the 1979 horror movie, Phantasm. Of course, a few minutes of screen time in a cult classic flick doesn't exactly change a place's fate, as it only stuck around a few more years before becoming a sushi joint in 1983.

The famous club was built out of what was originally a Foster's Cafeteria restaurant, opening its doors in 1976. Despite the brick and glass venue's terrible acoustics, during its time, The Old Waldorf hosted some of the biggest names in the music industry across a wide variety of musical genres. Despite the venue's full event calendar and solid ticket sales, the owner's closed down The Old Waldorf in 1983 and reopened it as The Punch Line comedy club which still occupies the space today. This one is based on the first of only two shirt designs the club ever released which came out sometime in 1978.

Joe and Pauline Saska started the restaurant in 1951, when they purchased the High Tide Bar at 3769 Mission Blvd. and gave it their name. Since day one from their prime location right in the heart of Mission Beach, Saska’s maintained it’s loungey, old-school chophouse vibe, maintaining their cool by offering straightforward steak dinners, seafood dishes, and classic cocktails in their original dark, wood-clad space with cozy booth seating and a rooftop patio.

P.J.’s Hollywood was a Parisian style go go club owned by Bill Doherty, Paul Raffles, Phil Tanzini, and Elmer Valentine, friends and associates from Chicago. They opened P.J.’s in 1961, taking the name from the initials of Paul and his girlfriend, Judy, who had previously run a successful club in Chicago called The Black Orchid. The goal was to create a late night destination that became the place to be when all the other nightclubs called it a night. The clientele was a mixture of celebrities, swingers, and criminals, but once they crossed under the backlit “les Poupées de Paris” (the dolls of Paris) sign, these night owls all had one thing in common – they were looking for a good time.

Just a quick and simple watercolour piece for this week. Having the challenge of painting a Sea Lion seemed like the result for a portrait would be too simple, since their forms are minimal and they don’t really have a texture or colour variation. So instead, I focused on composition for this piece using 3 Sea Lion pose references and working a background in to bring it all together. The end result is this piece which I think is quite a fun one and I’ve been referencing it as a hip hop album kind of homage.

The Zombie Hut was a Hawaiian/Polynesian-themed restaurant, nightclub and Tiki bar located on Freeport Blvd. between Florin Road and Sutterville Road in Sacramento, California that originally opened in 1945. Inspired by the 1930s Tiki craze, the night spot's quirky name came from the 1945 comedy, Zombies on Broadway, that featured a fictitious nightclub in New York City called the Zombie Hut. The restaurant drew large crowds for years with Polynesian dancers, Hawaiian singers and musicians, and of course, countless exotic cocktails. The '80s saw things slowing down, and new owners tried saving it with limited hours, a change in theme, and a new menu, but in 1990, Zombie Hut closed its doors for good.
