For those that aren't familiar with the "Join, or Die" graphic, it is a historic image created by Benjamin Franklin around 1754 and represents the quest for strength and freedom through solidarity. Each part of the snake represents one of the first colonies of the United States.

In 1754, Benjamin Franklin produced the 'Join, or Die' cartoon to highlight the importance of colonial unity. It later became a symbol of colonial freedom during the American Revolutionary War. The design consists of a snake, cut into 8, with each piece representing one of the American colonies or regions.

For those of us who know the importance of this year!

During the early years of America the rattle snake was used on flags. The snake was a popular symbol of America, a trend started by Ben Franklin in the 1750s, when he published America’s first political cartoon, a snake divided in eight parts with the caption, “Join, or die,” which represented Franklin’s idea that the colonies needed to unite and join together.. America of the time resonated with the rattlesnake in many ways. Not only is it native to this land they called home, but it represented vigilance and courage. The rattler, like America, didn’t strike unless provoked, and gives its enemies plenty of warning before engaging in battle. Once engaged, neither give up until they’ve won.
