The village of Iffley on the Thames at Oxford. At this point the river is properly called The Isis and as you walk along the Thames Path from here to Oxford you pass the Oxford University's college boathouses. The village itself is a conservation area, its narrow streets leading down to the river where you cross the weir to reach the lock. In the background, rising above the trees, is the Norman church of St Mary the Virgin, a Grade 1 listed building.

This is the coat of arms of Samuel Wilberforce, bishop of the Diocese of Oxford and Chancellor of the Order of the Garter. He was bishop of Oxford from 1845 to 1869. The Garter surrounding the shield is a privilege granted to bishops who are also Chancellors of the Order of Garter. Honi soit qui mal y pense translates to "Shame on him who evil thinks of it" and is the motto for the Order of the Garter. The symbols on the left of the shield are those of the Bishopric of Oxford and on the right of the shield is the Wilberforce coat of arms. All of this is under a mitre indicating it's an ecclesial herald.

An old Oxford college barge under the trees in a backwater of the River Thames between Oxford and Iffley. A number of barges like this were bought by the Oxford colleges' rowing clubs in the mid-1800s as changing rooms and viewing platforms for spectators during races. They have now been sold off and can be occasionally found as floating function rooms etc. Club houses were built to replace them and can be found near Christ Church Meadows in Oxford.

On entering the Oxford Modern Art Museum the first sign that I saw was ... "please touch me..." Art work on display designed to be interacted with ...what a novel experience. No longer viewing from afar, now possible to get up close and personal. This was the inspiration for this composite image "Spaghetti Junction". Those who live in the West Midlands part of England or motorists who travel on the M5 and wish to join the M6 will know well that this most complex series of motorway connectedness is referred to as Spaghetti Junction.

Aubreys Bridge or, as it is sometimes known, Smithy Bridge takes traffic to a car park and tea rooms. Passing through it, boats now enter the stretch of canal leading to Oxford. This section opened in 1788 and completed the waterway link between the Coventry coalfields and the Thames at Oxford - and then on to London.

A canalside scene at Shipton-on-Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The Oxford canal here is overlooked by the parish church of Holy Cross. The church and village predate the canal by several centuries - the River Cherwell being the only waterway then! There has been a church here since the C12th but after a number of additions it was demolished in 1831 and the present Gothic Revival one built. The canal arrived in 1788, built to link the Midland canals with the Thames at Oxford and thence to London. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The boathouses on the River Thames belonging to the Oxford colleges as viewed from the Thames Path. They are situated between Folly Bridge in Oxford and Iffley Lock. These buildings replace the barges which were established as clubhouses in the 1800s, the first being built in the 1930s. Many of them have a distinct Art Deco style. The newest, however, was constructed in the late 1980s. Here you can often see the rowing crews in training as they power they way along the river.
